Wolf Finds a Friend
February 13, 2024My son’s reading saga continues! There are now 6 Minecraft stories I wrote for my son. I’m posting them after he reads them. While he reads, I notice things that can be improved, so you get the edited versions.
I had him read this 3rd story, “Wolf Finds a Friend,” twice over 2 days. The first time it took him 25 minutes, the 2nd time only 9 minutes.
I realize that a lot of the speed gain comes from memorizing, so I plan to revisit them after he’s had time to forget.
I also notice he guesses words based on context, but I’m not as concerned when he guesses in these stories. By intentionally leaving out pictures, he guesses based on the context of the words rather than the context of the picture.
Wolf Finds a Friend
It was day and the sun was warm. In a big forest, there was a wolf. The wolf had no name. The wolf ran fast. He saw a lot of trees.
The wolf saw a fox. The fox ran fast, and the wolf did not catch it. Then, the wolf saw a rabbit. The rabbit had long ears. It hopped fast, and the wolf did not catch it. The wolf ran on.
Next, the wolf saw a sheep. The sheep did not run fast. The wolf chased the sheep. The wolf got the sheep. The wolf ate it. Yum!
Next he went up a big hill. The wolf felt cold air. It was night. At the top of the hill, the wolf saw a boy.
The boy saw the skeleton. The boy was scared. The skeleton was going to win.
But the wolf did not leave. The wolf ran at the skeleton. He was brave. He fought the skeleton. Then the wolf bit the skeleton. Crack! The bones broke.
The skeleton fell down. Poof! It was gone. The boy was safe.
The boy had meat. The boy gave the meat to the wolf. The wolf ate it. Yum! The wolf liked meat. The wolf liked the boy.
The boy said, "You are brave. You are my friend. I will give you a name. Your name is Scout." Scout the wolf wagged his tail. Now, he had a friend and a name.
